  • Mother Dorothy Kirkwood Mother Dorothy Kirkwood was born on June 10, 1935 in Eads, Tennessee to the late Eddie Joe and Rosie Morrow. She departed this life at 8:13 pm on Saturday, August 18, 2007. Dorothy attended the Fayette County Schools and was always eager to learn. However, she obtained her best education through life experiences. Dorothy, being one of 11 children, learned very early the art of being a true mother. As a young girl, she expressed a desire to learn more about Christ, often questioning her father about Acts 2:38 and other passages of the Bible. God was working, and the divine calling was evident in her youth, as she wanted to know then— “would she be saved?” Her hunger for righteousness was stirring within. Many are called, but few are chosen! When her mother passed, she was only 11 years old and took on the responsibility of raising her 10 sisters and brothers. Eventually, she met and married her life partner, the late Leroy Kirkwood in 1951. To this union was born 10 children: Ruby (Jimmy) Parrott of Vineland, NJ, Gladys (Myron) Kirkwood-Harris of Piscataway, NJ, Calvin (Rachel) Kirkwood of Madison, IL, Clyde Kirkwood of Piscataway, NJ, Gary (Sonja) Kirkwood, Sr. of Somerset, NJ; Valerie Jenkins of Piscataway, NJ, David (Toya) Kirkwood of Plainfield, NJ, Vernon (Audra) Kirkwood of Princeton, NJ, Carole-Lynne Kirkwood of Plainfield, NJ and Anthony Kirkwood of Piscataway, NJ. Leroy and Dorothy, along with their 4-month old baby girl, Ruby, journeyed to New Jersey with $6.50 in their pocket. Yes! $6.50 and a dream of making a new life for themselves. They soon affiliated with the Refuge Church of Christ, under the late Bishop Robert S. Grayer. At age 17, Dorothy accepted the water baptism in the Name of Jesus and was filled with the Gift of the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:38. This was her first step towards her desire to be saved. She actively participated in many areas of the church including the Senior Choir, the Missionary Department, Women’s Council, Sunday School and ABYPU Youth Department. Being led by God, she began serving under her Son, Pastor Gary Kirkwood, Sr. She served as Senior Missionary and Church Mother, a Member of the Distinguished Seniors Fellowship, and a volunteer “Granny” for the King’s Temple Christian Alternative Private School. She was licensed and ordained for the edification and spreading of the Gospel. What a mighty work! God’s manifestation in Dorothy carried through in her position with Harvest Radio WKMB, where she actively worked to spread the simple Gospel message. Many lives were touched through her daily prayer and teaching over the airways. Dorothy was a true mother in every way! She believed in the scripture, which stated “train up a child”. She embraced this responsibility with love and always looked to see the good in people. She worked diligently in the home teaching and guiding her children, spreading the gospel and showing love. She often visited neighbors, fellow-saints and family enjoying prayer, singing and discussing God’s word. The challenges of life made her strong and instilled an even greater hunger for God’s righteousness. Dorothy has fought […]
